New Delhi (AGENCY) 06 March – Aam Admi Party (AAP) leaders Ashutosh and Shazia Ilmi have been charged with rioting by the Delhi police after a violent tussle broke out between AAP supporters and the members of the BJP outside the latter’s headquarters in Delhi yesterday.
According to reports journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh, who will contest the Lok Sabha elections next month, was seen climbing the gate of the BJP office. Stones were hurled and chairs were flung from within the BJP headquarters. Similar street battles took place in Lucknow at BJP’s state party office .
Delhi Police have named Ashutosh, Shazia Ilmi and Anand Kumar in its FIR filed at Parliament Street Police Station. The police have also arrested at least 17 AAP workers in connection with the incident and they will be produced before the Patiala House Court today.
Charges of rioting, obstructing a public servant from performing his duty and damaging public property have been slapped against them, the sources said.
This comes after angry clashes and stone pelting on Wednesday as AAP and BJP workers clashed in Delhi, Lucknow and even Gujarat, soon after the Lok Sabha election dates were announced. The detention of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in Gujarat on Wednesday sparked off street clashes between AAP and BJP workers.
Police have termed the AAP protest as completely illegal as no prior permission was sought in this connection by the party.
Meanwhile, Kejriwal has apologised for the violence and street clashes. Three AAP leaders named in the FIR will be summoned for questioning by Delhi Police today.
Police had initially detained 33 people out of which 14 were arrested late last night while others were allowed to go.
